Antimicrobial and antibiotic-potentiating effect of calcium peroxide nanoparticles on oral bacterial biofilms

Bacterial biofilms pose major treatment challenges, but introducing oxygen via calcium peroxide nanoparticles (CaO2 NP) offers a powerful strategy to boost antibiotic effectiveness. Research shows that combining CaO2 NP with tobramycin sulfate significantly enhances biofilm eradication against Pseudomonas aeruginosa in vitro. Furthermore, clinical oral studies demonstrated that this combination increases bacterial mortality to 69%, confirming the nanoparticles' strong potential as antimicrobial and antibiotic potentiators - npj | biofilms and microbiomes

Extracellular Release of a Disintegrin and Metalloproteinase Correlates With Periodontal Disease Severity

Periodontal disease is driven by oral pathogens like P. gingivalis and inflammatory cytokines, which interact with ADAM proteins. By analyzing patients' gingival crevicular fluid, this study demonstrated that ADAM8 expression and activity correlate directly with disease severity, whereas ADAM10 correlates inversely. The findings conclude that the dysregulation of ADAM proteolytic activity is a key driver in periodontal disease progression, highlighting the targeting of ADAM8 as a promising and novel local therapeutic option for future translational studies - Journal of Clinical Periodontology
